OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN HONDURAS MEDICAL MISSION TEAM
Our Lord’s UMC is assembling a Medical Mission Team to travel to Honduras, February 28 - March 8, 2009.
Following a number of building mission trips, the Honduras Mission Team at OLUMC conducted our first medical mission in 2005 and then again in 2006 and 2008. New emphasis by the United Methodist Church Volunteers in Mission (VIM) in Honduras has requested that we work with local public health personnel in future trips. In our efforts to do so, we are communicating with United Methodist churches in Wisconsin and neighboring states to work cooperatively in the calling to “love one another” using the gifts that we have been given. We hope that those of you with the appropriate medical expertise will consider joining us to serve one or several Honduran communities where medical expertise is so desperately needed. Physicians and nurses are particularly needed for this trip.
Our key focus will be on the working with the general population of families that do not otherwise have access to medical care, assessing, diagnosing, and treating for common medical issues. Due to the living conditions and general environmental hygiene, we have witnessed a large proportion of children with asthma, diarrhea with attendant dehydration, and dermal and intestinal parasites. Additionally, we have seen large numbers of cases of respiratory infection, accomplished wound repair, provided prenatal exams and have distributed thousands of doses of prenatal and children’s vitamins. Finally, at the Honduras Consultation held recently in Frankfort, Kentucky, a new emphasis on public health education was stressed. We hope to add that to our repertoire during this trip.
This is an ideal opportunity to get a taste of missions with a leadership team that has already “been there and done that.” Our team is excited about continuing our participation in this outreach area and hope that you can be a part of this wonderful adventure.
