Literacy Services of Wisconsin

Literacy Services of Wisconsin (LSW) offers one-on-one tutoring to adults who need help with basic literacy, English as a second language, or GED/High School Equivalency certification. Volunteers take an orientation session, then five hours of training. They normally volunteer for a minimum of two hours per week, scheduled at their convenience.  The site for much of the tutoring is at the Laubach Literacy Center at 2724 West Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53208 and has a gated parking area. For more information, call LSW at (414) 344-5878 or visit their informative web site at www.literacyservices.org for photos, calendar of orientation, hours the site is open, and an overview of this much-needed service. Tutors with small children can have their children take part in the Family Literacy Program with children of students. Several church members currently tutor at LSW.

Volunteers are also needed at the Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha, Inc., 217 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 16, Waukesha, WI 53186.  This group provides tutors throughout Waukesha County.  To reach them, call 262-547-READ (7323) or 262-547-MATH (6284).  Their tutoring services are at a variety of locations, such as public libraries, rather than at a central site. For more information, check their web site at www.waukeshaliteracy.org.

Think how you would feel if you could not drive because you can't read traffic signs, could not write a check because you can't write the words for numbers, can't read the labels on medicine containers, or can't read bills you receive.

Then take this opportunity help people to function better in society.
