We are coming together to seek understanding, stand for justice and celebrate unity.
Why the 19th of every month? Organizers wanted a date with significance. A date to motivate us ahead.
The 19th brings to mind the Milwaukee, public festivities on Juneteenth Day. It first took place in 1971, making it one of the first northern cities to host celebrations to commemorate emancipation. Since 1971 Milwaukee has been home to large and vibrant annual celebrations every year, hosted by the Northcott Neighborhood House, a community center supported by The United Methodist Church connection, in Milwaukee's Harambee neighborhood.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings.
It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.
In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others,
only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

Books and Magazines for Milwaukee County Jail
Earlier this summer, it was announced in the What’s Happening e-mail that paperback books and magazines could no longer be accepted for the Milwaukee County Jail. However, one of the jail library volunteers asked the jail administration if the jail library volunteers could collect books and magazines, package them in boxes, mark the boxes for delivery to the 18 units in the jail, and bring all the boxes to the jail so the volunteer coordinator could deliver the boxes to the units in the jail. Last week, this proposal was agreed upon, so the library volunteers have been busy collecting this reading material from all their sources. A lot is needed as the jail has about 700 inmates, and each unit has to be treated equally. At this time, this is a one-time-only opportunity. Many thanks for your help.

The pop-up collection for The Cathedral Center at Sunday's Drive-In Live service @ Our Lord's yielded 40 bottles each of body wash, toothpaste and deodorant, along with toothbrushes, hand soap and mouthwash. Ana Treptow, volunteer and development coordinator at The Cathedral Center, accepted our donations on Monday. This was a great success! Many thanks to all of you who made donations!

This batch of BEAUTIFUL garden produce was harvested and ready for distribution earlier this week! Thank you to all of our faithful gardeners who've given their time and the use of their green thumbs this season to grow these gorgeous vegetables for the hungry in our community and beyond!

“Pop up” food drive: Thanks to ALL who dropped off food and donations May 29th in response to a critical need at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. Two full carloads of food and $265 in cash were delivered. Making a difference – Amen!!
Easter giving results: The Mission team shared the urgent request to support United Methodist Children’s Services just prior to Easter. You came through, with gifts totaling $2510 in response!! Incredible!! This, despite the disruption to our normal gatherings for Holy Week and Easter Sunday celebration. Our Lords congregation once again demonstrated their generosity in sharing with God’s children. Thank you!

The Cathedral Center at St. John’s Cathedral in downtown Milwaukee provides shelter on an ongoing basis for about 55 homeless women and children. About once a month, a group of volunteers from Our Lord’s meet at church at 6:00 p.m. to drive downtown and return to church by 8:30 p.m. The volunteers serve a meal to the women and children and prepare lunches for the next day. If you can help by donating a main dish, salad, dessert, and beverages, volunteer to go and serve, or do both, please contact Church office for volunteer sign-up.
