United Women in Faith Reading Program
The UWF Reading Program has four eligible reading plans based on five categories, which are as follows: Education for Mission, Leadership Development, Nurturing for Community, Social Action, and Spiritual Growth. Requirements for the reading plans are one book from each category, for a total of 5 (Plan 1); two books from each category for a total of 10 (Plan 2); two books from each category, plus five additional books from any category, for a total of 15 books (Plan 3); and two books from each category plus ten additional books from any category for a total of 20 books (Plan 4). If you need more information about the UWF Reading Program, please contact the church office at 414-425-7030 to be put in touch with Gwenda Szczygielski.
In prior 2022- 2023 Salt issues, summaries were given of two books eligible for the 2023 Reading Program: Before We Were Yours (Nurturing for Community) and The Four Winds (Social Action). Another book from the NFC category is The Prodigal Prophet by Timothy Keller. In this book the author analyzes and discusses the Old Testament book of Jonah, which only has four chapters containing 48 verses. Although the book of Jonah may be short, Keller’s analyses and discussions bring out many interesting and thought-provoking aspects. In one such analysis, the book’s title (The Prodigal Prophet) is reviewed using Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son. Other perspectives from the New Testament, using chapter headings from the book, are Who is My Neighbor?; Embracing the Other; The Pattern of Love; Running From Grace; Doing Justice, Preaching Wrath; The Character of Compassion; Our Relationship With God’s Word; Our Relationship to God’s World; Our Relationship to God’s Grace.
This book gives a whole different perspective to the book of Jonah; it is much more than the story of a man swallowed by a big fish, which is what most people remember about it! The book is available from the New Berlin Library Café system and is well worth your reading time.
